Last night was another Let’s Bake Inverness event, and in preparation for Real Bread Week (taking place next week) our theme was Dough! Any yeasted or other bread product was very welcome. I enjoy making all kinds of bread but wanted to try my hand at something new, so opted to make some doughnuts in a trial run a few weeks ago!
The doughnut recipe I tried was from the Lakeland website, and I used their doughnut making kit which I saw in the sale there too. I’m not the biggest fan of sillicon moulds, but these were good and did the job of shaping my doughnuts as they were proved!
These were simply decorated with a milk, vanilla and icing sugar glaze and sprinkles. The buns were filled with blueberry jam and then topped with glaze and sprinkles.
The main difference for these doughnuts were in the baking – as these were cooked in the oven rather than the conventional deep-fried method. They definitely taste healthier, and before I got round to icing them with the glaze – Mr B decided to snaffle a couple for eating straight out of the oven (What can I say, he spied freshly baked white carbs and sought his opportunity)!
A week later, I tried out the same recipe, with frying the ring doughnuts instead of baking. They were a resounding success (partly down to having Mr B with a timer on hand to get that perfect golden brown colour)!
