Last week I had to head down to Glasgow for a brief visit, so took the opportunity to find somewhere new. I would have loved to had time to go further afield than the city centre, but I had to be reasonably close to the train station. I found a very good lunch menu (and recommendation from Food and Drink Glasgow‘s blog) at Once Upon a Tart.
It’s furnished to an alternative or darker Alice in Wonderland style, with stripped back floorboards, and lots of pink and black accessories, and of course bunting across the walls and counter. Tables and chairs are a mish-mashed assortment of styles and shapes.
Specials are written in chalk behind the counter, and you’re given a few minutes to peruse before it’s decision time and the waitress comes to take your order.
As well as all-day breakfast options, there’s a good combination of interesting mains, sandwiches and ciabattas. If you have intolerances/allergies to wheat/gluten or dairy, here’s where you might come unstuck as there didn’t seem as if there was any alternatives offered (but each item did note where any of those ingredients would occur) to bread etc.
I went for a soup and sandwich deal for £6 which was an absolute bargain. A huge teacup/bucket of thick pea and pesto soup, and a mozzerella, pesto and tomato sandwich. The roll was super soft and filled with lots of creamy mozzarella which was a real treat as I don’t normally eat a lot of cheese. It also came with a small scoop of potato salad and a rocket and balsamic side salad.
It was filling, but I had a good book and so paced myself as the real reason I came to Once Upon a Tart was to try something from their freshly bakes cake and tart range. It was huge and there were some highly tempting options.
I stuck with something relatively light without any frosting/icing and enjoyed my summer fruit cake which had a light layer of berry jam over the top. The cakes were all incredible value – this slab was £2.50 meaning my lunch came to £8.50 which is brilliant (and meant that I felt suitably full and sleepy for my journey back to Inverness!)
This wasn’t a sponsored post and really enjoyed my lunch here – I’d recommend it!
