Another stop on our UK leg of our holidays was near our old home before moving to Scotland – Richmond, South West London. Despite living in the area for 6 years I had never ventured to Steins – which is a Bavarian outdoor restaurant. During a walk around Richmond Park, we (my lovely bridesmaid Isabel and I) were convinced by Mr B and Tim that this was the ideal lunch stop. I’m sure that the promise of a litre of german beer on a hot summers day had nothing to do with it (!)
After sharing a basket of Brezel (Pretzels) Isabel and I ordered Bayerische Wurst- und Käseplatte: Assortment of sliced Bavarian sausages, ham, salami, cheeses, brie and gherkins served with a bread basket and butter for two. We also ordered a side order of Sauerkraut which was huge! The boys had to help us out at the end with finishing it, so this platter could serve 3 mildly hungry people!
Tim enjoyed Schweinebraten mit Kartoffelknödel und Rotkraut: Roasted pork shoulder served with potato dumplings and cooked red cabbage.
Mr B chose Nürnberger Würstchen vom Grill mit Sauerkraut und Kartoffelbrei: Original small pork sausages (portion of 5) from the famous Bavarian town of Nürnberg, filled with spices and herbs, full of flavour, served grilled with Bavarian-style sauerkraut and potato mash.
All the food was delicious, good value considering the location alongside the Thames at Richmond, and gave us a foretaste of our trip to Germany the following week!
