Regular readers will know that I start most days with a bowl of granola. I find that the combination of oats along with any combination of seeds, fruit and nuts really helps my concentration in the office, and staves off the mid morning urge for a snack.
I flit between making my own and buying branded granola in our supermarket shop, but the lovely team at Great Little Grains recently popped in the post some of their launch range for me to sample!
There are six combinations of muesli and granola in the full Sown & Grown range – and the first thing immediately apparent is that each 450g batch of cereal is stored in a tube with a airtight lid to prolong freshness.
I requested a sample of the Apple and Blackcurrant Multigrain Granola. As with all the other varieties, this features 100% British grains, apple pieces, blackcurrants, flaked almonds, linseeds and pumpkin seeds – all coated in honey and rapeseed oil. The whole range is high fibre, wholegrain, low salt, low fat, and the mueslis are all low saturated fat.
The sample of granola I tried has 8.4g of sugars (that’s just under 10% of the recommended daily allowance and is certainly a few percent below another brand of granola I’ve got in the cupboard) and certainly didn’t taste overly sweet. In fact, the freeze-dried blackcurrants provided a lovely pop of sharpness alongside the grunch of the grains, seeds and apple pieces.
There seems to be a good concentration of fruit in the batch, (I hate it when you get to the bottom of a box of cereal and there are just the dregs of the flakes left) and the quantity of 450g provides 11 servings. Perfect for a couple of weeks to start your day off right.
The Sown & Grown range from Great Little Grains can be found in Sainsburys. (£3.95 for 450g)
Thanks to Great Little Grains for providing us with a sample for review, and the photography (first image). All other photography and opinions, are my own.
