The Big Craft Giveaway is a yearly celebration of Scottish craft, and I was delighted to find out that there was going to be a workshop in Inverness! I signed up well in advance and turned up at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery yesterday to work with Grant McCaig who lectures at the Edinburgh college of Art, as well as being a jeweller and silversmith.
He had prepared small discs of wood which had holes drilled into them. It was up to us as to how we decorated them – there was a real array of beads, strings, and wires to use, as well as a whole range of techniques and skills to learn! I particularly liked making the green brooch as I tried lots of different techniques. I’m not sure that my items would be anyone’s cup of tea but it was great to try new skills anyway!
We were free to make as many decorations/pendants/brooches as we liked, as long as there was at least one that be given at the main Big Craft Giveaway event (next Saturday 21st September at venues all around Scotland). I kept my gilded and beaded brooch and left the other two items for the giveaway.
You can see a selection of my pictures below (taken hastily at the end of the event, when I remembered that I had my camera with me!) that show the creations I made. I would have happily stayed on for the afternoon workshop too, had I not had a lunchtime reunion at Velocity with an ex work colleague!
