Washington DC is the fourth and final stop in our holiday, and we’ve got the most planned out for this leg of the trip! It really was a toss up between here and Philadelphia, but we couldn’t choose both, and Mr B’s love of american political dramas (West Wing, House of Cards) won out for us.
We arrive on our Amtrak train from New York in late afternoon on the Thursday, and fly out back to London on the Sunday night, so we have just about 3 days to explore. We’re staying at a Hyatt hotel in Arlington, which is not quite in Washington DC, but is opposite a metro stop which takes us across the river into DC, and is in a really handy location for the bus to the airport on the way home.
Here’s the final pinterest board (it’s quite sparse, need to add some more pins!)
Our first full day (and my birthday!) will take us on tours of the Pentagon, and the Capitol building. You can book both of these up to three months in advance. You need all your passport information when you book as there’s a slight delay on approving tour applications. We’ve also been recommended the Arlington Cemetery which is a very moving experience.
We’re not sure what to do in the evening – being Halloween and all, we’re sure that there will be a great atmosphere in the city centre. Any recommendations?
On the Saturday night we have booked tickets to an NBA basketball game at the Verizon centre – seeing the Washington Wizards play the Milwaukee Bucks. This is one of the things that we are most looking forward to – me for the experience of getting a classic ‘American experience’, and Mr B just cannot wait to see the basketball players in play, being an ex-basketballer at school. We have got seats almost at the top of the auditorium (the cheap ones!) but we’ll still get a great view with the big screens and hopefully some banter from the locals too!
On Sunday we are going to find a local church and then find a good lunch somewhere, by then it will be time to collect our bags from the hotel and head to the airport for our journey home!
